History Of the Shabelle Education Umbrella (SHEDU)
Shabelle Education Umbrella (SHEDU) is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profit making women and children’s organization, established in 2003 by Somali professionals, after when they knew that the children of Middle Shabelle Region do not have basic quality education and all educational institutions collapsed, the development of this institution came after when we knew that there has been only one school functional in Middle Shabelle Region. Hence, the organization went on to develop its structure and currently is one of the organizations which are actively operational in Middle Shabelle Region with a clear mandate, organizational structure and guided by a constitution. Under the umbrella, all the schools follow the same school term and duration of the academic year and the timely examinations have been harmonized in the region, this has further strengthened the coordination mechanisms of all the schools that come under Shabelle Education Umbrella. Significant achievements have been reached during SHEDU activities in Middle Shabelle region, the number of schools have increased, enrolment rate increased.
SHEDU’s main objectives are to increase access to primary schools to the most needed children, vulnerable children who belong to poor and marginalized families and to Protect the Rights of Children in the Middle Shabelle Region.
SHEDU has established itself as a reliable development organization in Jowhar, Balad, Mahaday, Warshiekh and Adale Districts, Middle Shabelle Region of Somalia.
SHEDU’s main office in Jowhar and mainly works in Middle Shabelle region. and has future plans to have sub offices at other states or regions of Somalia.
SHEDU has prestige and image in the region. It has produced gender policy and cost sharing policy for stakeholders’ cooperation and satisfaction. Community involvement in project work was high during assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. These efforts achieved a substantial level of household food security for women headed households as the intended project beneficiaries.
The education committee of shabelle education umbrella took the lead of education activities in the area of middle shabelle region. During that period significant achievements were observed.
Our achievement includes improving and increasing of the enrolment, teachers, and remuneration through mobilization and introducing regular school fee and monitoring system. The group has establishment standardized academic school year and exams and strengthening as well as school parent/community education committees’ involvement. The experience and qualifications of middle shabelle region committee in the field of education permits them to effectively implement the education activities.
As indigenous people, they felt that they had the ability to access the Education and act as a bridge between the suffering of lack of education and desperate local communities and the International organizations which came the country to help the Somali people. This was the philosophy behind the establishment of SHEDU. The newly established Umbrella -SHEDU actively participated in the alleviation of the educational opportunities during 2003 – 2021 with the help of UNICEF, education section as well as Local Communities in terms of Mobilization CECs, Mentoring primary and inexperienced teachers, provision of teachers’ incentives for emergency education in some of the villages of Mahaday, Jowhar and Balad Districts of Middle Shabelle Region and still committed to fight for that.
